How do I post an assignment in McGraw-Hill/ConnectED in Google Classroom?

McGraw-Hill does not support direct-linking of their content from other places (websites, Google Classroom, E-mail, etc.).  This can be confusing, especially because they have a link in their software to post assignments to Google Classroom.  While that process does post a link to their content in Google Classroom, the link doesn't work if the student hasn't already entered/logged into ConnectEd through Clever.

We have developed a straight-forward way around this issue.  To make things go smoothly when posting a McGraw-Hill ConnectED assignment in Google Classroom, please do the following:

  1. Create the desired assignment in ConnectED for the appropriate students.  If you aren't sure how to create an assignment in ConnectED, I'll give you an example in Wonders, the K-5 reading series that we use.  Everyday Math, Reveal Math, and Chemistry have their own interfaces, but the process is similar.
  2. First, login to ConnectED, open the Teacher Edition, and go to the "Manage and Assign Menu at the top of the screen.  Choose Assignment Manager.
  3. Next, ensure you are in the proper class by choosing your class from the drop down menu in the upper right corner.
  4. Click "Make an Assignment."
  5. Fill out the Assignment Name, enter the instructions for what you want your students to accomplish, set a start date, a due date, and an expiration date (which is when the assignment will disappear from the student's To Do list).
  6. Select the students you'd like this assignment to apply to.  If it is all students, just click the All link.  That's what I'm going to choose.
  7. On the right side, click the Edit button next to Resources.  Add the materials students will need for this assignment.  In this case, I'm going to choose a particular story.  I search for the relevant material and check the "Add" box above it.  You can add multiple resources, but I'm just choosing this one.  When finished, click Done.
  8. Finally, I need to scroll to the bottom of the assignment page, below my student list, and click Assign.  For the purposes of this video, I'm not going to do that because I don't want students names in a public video.  Trust me, however, the button is there.  Once you click the assign button, the assignment will appear, according to the dates you set, in each student's "To Do" list in ConnectED.
  9. Switch to Google Classroom.  Create an assignment in Google Classroom as you normally would.  I would title it something like "ConnectED assignment for 'Mama I'll Give You the World.'  In the instructions, I would enter something like "Click here to go to ConnectED to complete this assignment.  Remember to click on Wonders and then open your To Do list." 10.  The link that you should post in the instructions, no matter the assignment or text book series you use, is http://url.npsd.org/connected . *This is kind of a magic link that will automatically wrap kids from Google Classroom to Clever to McGraw-Hill automatically.  It ensures that their Clever credentials are passed to McGraw-Hill, taking students to their ConnectED main page.*
    1. **DO NOT POST LINKS THAT YOU'VE COPIED FROM MCGRAW-HILL AND DON'T USE THE SHARE TO GOOGLE CLASSROOM LINK WITHIN CONNECTED** This will result in confused students and parents. Some will get in (if they already signed into McGraw-Hill) and the rest will not.
